Spectral Signatures of Flow Regime Alteration by Dams Across the United States

چکیده
River scientists strive to understand how streamflow regimes vary across space and time because it is fundamental predicting the impacts of climate change human activities on riverine ecosystems. Here we tested whether flow periodicity differs between rivers that are regulated or unregulated by large dams, dominant periodicities over in response dam regulation. These questions were addressed calculating wavelet power at different timescales, ranging from 6 hr 10 years, 175 pairs dam-regulated USGS gages with long-term discharge data, spanning conterminous United States. We then focused eight focal reservoirs high-quality high-frequency data examine spectral signatures dam-induced alteration their time-varying nature. found regulation dams induces changes not only magnitude variability, but also a river's regime. Our analysis revealed generally alter multi-annual annual higher extent than seasonal daily periodicity. Based reservoirs, illustrate varying, operations (e.g., peaking vs. baseload operation), capacity, environmental policies shifting relative importance time. demonstrates pervasiveness now characterizing U.S. rivers' regimes, may inform restoration downstream via controlled releases—a critical need light new damming retrofitting for hydropower globally.

Background and aims: The aim of this study was to explore ethnic differences in demographic and socioeconomic determinants of poor physical and mental self-rated health (SRH) in the United States. Methods: We used data from the Collaborative Psychiatric Epidemiology Surveys (CPES) 2001- 2003, which included a national household probability sample of 18237 individuals including 520 Vietnamese, 5...
متن کاملHealth System Reform in the United States
In 2010, the United States adopted its first-ever comprehensive set of health system reforms in the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Implementation of the law, though politically contentious and controversial, has now reached a stage where reversal of most elements of the law is no longer feasible. The controversial portions of the law that expand affordable health insurance coverage to most U.S. cit...

This research demonstrates wide variation in tightness-looseness (the strength of punishment and degree of latitude/permissiveness) at the state level in the United States, as well as its association with a variety of ecological and historical factors, psychological characteristics, and state-level outcomes. Consistent with theory and past research, ecological and man-made threats--such as a hi...
